Let me tell you a big secret…the financial services industry wants and needs you to be confused and intimidated when it comes to investing. That’s because the more complicated investing seems, the more that you are willing to pay the financial services industry for their understanding.
“My job is to answer you honestly, not sell you products you don’t need or understand.”
Financial services professionals earn the biggest chunk of their revenue by charging fees, transaction costs, and commissions by picking stocks, timing the markets, and coaxing you into overpriced securities, regardless of the value they provide. You put up 100% of the capital and take 100% of the risk, yet can end up keeping only a fraction of your returns.
As an investor, how would you know when you are being overcharged, if your portfolio is underperforming, or if you are paying for products, rather than for fiduciary advice? Unless you understand how capital markets work and which questions to ask, you are at a great disadvantage.
Needless to say, this commissions-based business model has been incredibly lucrative for financial services professionals and is fiercely guarded, despite being at the expense of investors’ best interest (check out the book written by Fred Schwed, “Where Are The Customer’s Yachts?”, which takes a deeper look at the financial services industry and why the advisors are the ones with the yachts, rather than the clients–it’s been a staple for over 50 years.)
Of course, there is a much better approach to investing than the cost-generating speculation gimmicks touted by the majority of financial professionals. It’s based on decades of peer-reviewed research, Nobel Prize-winning ideas, and empirical evidence. This evidence-based approach to investing relies on data and reasoning, and focuses only on those actions that help improve the odds of investment success over the long term (like minimizing costs!).
I can help you implement these proven principles if you want. Or, you can do them on your own or with your existing professionals if you so choose. (What Does A Free Second Opinion Review Include?)
Along with advising clients on how to invest intelligently, I am an investor advocate, promoting transparency and education in the industry. Feel comfortable reaching out if you’d like me to go over any of this, no strings.
Good luck.
